Trimax Bus

There’s been quite a few buses already that have been implemented in a marketing plan as a carrier of the message. That’s a good thing, because they are very visible in the city environment, a lot of people pay attention to them and use them on a daily basis. This particular ad for OTO Trimax is not the strongest I’ve seen, but it demonstrates the use of the product and the effect in a fairly acceptable visual way. Seeing this bus doesn’t make me want to have the product, it doesn’t make me want to go look for it. But I will remember the name, and that’s already a start.

Landmine Jogging

There’s been plenty of awareness campaigns for the situation regarding landmines. I’ve covered a few, but cetainly not all of them. The most impressive one so far is the ‘Handicap’ guerrilla from students of the Miami Ad School, but this one from Australia is also pretty neat. At first I was a little happy because apparently 6000 people less are the victim of landmines, since this ad mentions 20.000 casualties a year and the one from Miami Ad School mentions 26.000. Nevertheless, it’s still far too many. What I like about this ad is that they relocated the field of action to the country where the this campaign runs. It brings the matter closer to the people and makes them even more aware of the situation by making it easy to picture the seriousness of the problem in Afghanistan. The ‘what if it happened to you’ visual is totally cutting. And that’s a strong element to use. Just imagine going out to the store, only to find yourself in a hospital for the next few days and coming home with only one leg and no groceries. And that’s when you’re lucky. All because some army blokes decided to dig in a landmine somewhere (coincidentally where you pass) and ‘forgot’ to pick it up again as the fight relocated or ended.

John Miles Kidnapped by C.M.O.N.S.

Yeah, they’re quite the hype, those C.M.O.N.S. (c’mons or c-mons?). For a quite a few weeks already there’s been a lot of buzz around them. Rumors have it that they’re not a rockband like they pretend to be, that they’re a marketing stunt for some product launch. People said it was pronounced c-mons, and related it to the mobile phone brand Siemens. Others said it was for a tv show. The C.M.O.N.S. appeared on MTV, have a subdomain on the MTV site, they have MySpace profiles and a Spanish background according to those pages. During commercial breaks they appear in between commercials for a few seconds. There were stickers, wall paintings and floor graffiti all over Europe and their entire presentation is always by means of some knitted gingerbread-man figurines. Are they real or not? The fact is, I’ve been informed that those little puppets have managed to kidnap John Miles. It appears to be related to the Night of the Proms… are they coming too? On the action site it says: all we want is a gig at the Night Of The Proms. The url says ‘night of the cmons’, and in the video John Miles is ‘corrected’ by Blue (the puppet’s name) that it’s Night of the C’mons, not Night of the Proms. Is it ‘buzz’ for the Night of the Proms concerts? It appears to be so. Check out the link below and see the ‘victory’ video from the C.M.O.N.S. where they make John Miles beg for mercy. If you sign the petition on the site, maybe they’ll let him go in time to perform.

Science Guerrilla

I don’t know the agency that came up with this, but I’m quite entertained by seeing an execution like the one pictured below. The goal of this outdoor action is of course to make people aware of the National Sciences & Technology Expo at the Wellington Central Library (New Zealand) in December of last year. Nice work from down under, again. I love the humoristic take on the subject, simulating an experiment that went wrong and where the scientist has been catapulted (or maybe exploded). It would’ve been great to dig in a window dummy (mannequin) a few yards next to this outdoor, dressed up as a scientist. Head down in the ground, a little smoke from the feet. Heheh. Sorry, I’m letting myself go a bit. That’s what happens on a Friday :)

Red Cross Guerrilla

DownTown Partners, a Canadian agency based in Toronto, did a very good job with this guerrilla for the Red Cross. For the ‘Learn First Aid’ campaign, they’ve placed stickers on the floor at the bottom of staircases, simulating an accident (like someone fell down the stairs). Next to the bodies, they’ve put a sticker of the Canadian Red Cross to clarify the situation, urging people to learn first aid so they could help if needed. The tagline on the stickers read: “Know what to do”. Pretty scary if you’re on the top of the stairs and are looking down. The guerrilla was executed at the Cineplex Odeon Theaters in Toronto. The mission was to shock people and I believe they’ve succeeded very well in doing so.

Nexcare Guerrilla

Not really all that impressive, but still remarkable. This city guerrilla for Nexcare consisted of placing first aid band-aids over broken things such as: cracks in the walls, broken windows etc. It’s bit too simple to be good I think, but on the other hand, so is the use of the band-aid: simple and for average small things. I’m not really sure about this action. There’s so much more you could do with this topic so I’m silently hoping it was part of a bigger campaign and that they’ve done some really cool things as well. Anyone?

Spam On The Beach

“During the summer, French political activists representing the conservative UMP party toured the beaches to attract new voters. Besides handing out conventional marketing stuff such as leaflets, t-shirts etc., the activists also gave away condoms and flip-flops. The flip-flops had the UMP imprint mirrored on the sole so they would leave the initials in the sand.” As much as I like the idea as a marketeer, I’ve seen this before and I’m not too convinced about this form of urban spam. Of course it’s just temporary and the prints will wash away with the next flood, but still… it’s too ‘up your face’, especially if you’re not supporting that specific political party and are at the beach. I’d really hate it if the place I went to was infested with imprints of a certain political party. It’s like saying: ‘we claim this beach’. And I don’t think anyone has the right to claim public space. Some places need to be preserved of politics for everyone, regardless of what they think or who they support. But that’s just my two cents.
