Bosch Outdoor

10 Oct

Somewhere in Germany, Bosch ran an outdoor ad for its ironing equipment by placing the steam holes of the iron over a sewer cover. The license plate reveals that the car in the background comes from Memmingen, Bavaria. Of course it could just be passing by so it’s not an indication the action actually took place there. Pretty weird they’ve used an English text in the ad itself instead of a German text though. Besides the fact that this is much like the Folgers ad, the same rules apply. From a distance it might look cool, but I don’t want my shirt to smell like that sewer, and the smoke coming out of it will definitely not smell like lavender, if you know what I mean. Better not come too close or you might add the wrong values to this product. ;)

PIAS Music First

08 Oct

Somewhere last year the PIAS record label launched a campaign with two pretty daring clips. One of them is even so ‘over the edge’ that if I post it here I’ll be expecting another message from Google Adsense about the ToS violation I’ll be making, so I’ll just link to it. The theme of the clips is the same for both: “What is the second most important thing in your mind?” – Studies have proven that music is on the first place even before sex or alcohol. A good reason for a music company like PIAS to make some rough clips about it and promote their business. The clip below is titled: ‘Alcoholic

Other clip, titled ‘Fucker’ – Google Video Link, too rated for this blog.

Agency: Ogilvy Belgium
Client: PIAS Music Company
Creative Director: Phil Van Duynen

The Summer Of Boony

25 Sep

Australian agency Accure together with the ad agency George Patterson Y&R were heavily involved with a promotion for Foster’s Australia called VB Boonanza. This promotion was all about a little interactive talking figurine, the Boony Doll, using technology from Veil Interactive to react to pings from the TV network telecasting the cricket games. The Boony Doll would come to life every time the cricket was on and talk to the consumers at home in his typical Aussie Bloke demeanour.

Each Talking Boony contained a 60 sec sound chip that contained over 35 unique phrases and individual code words.

There were two elements to the technology:

  1. Audio triggers – the figurines would respond to audio triggers transmitted by Nine during the cricket and embedded in TVC’s. Depending on which trigger the figurine heard, it would respond with a particular style of phrase, allowing it interact with what was happening during the cricket. The phrases were grouped; “good shot”, “good ball”, “appeal” and “random silence”. The random silence phrases include comments like “Anyone seen me thongs?” and “I feel like playing totem tennis”.
  2. Pre-programmed phrases – the figurines were timed to power up and down to conserve battery life. They were also designed to come to life at certain times and say a particular phrase such as “Hey get me a VB, the cricket’s about to start” before each innings. They also announced a daily code word during the telecast that consumers could SMS for the chance to win exclusive merchandise.

The idea of a Talking Boony figurine brought the VB Boonanza campaign to life and allowed the idea to flow through to all the other touch points. The campaign was quite successful and took out a promo lion at Cannes as well as various awards in Australia and USA. [see awards here]

Spiked Magazines

20 Sep

Another good campaign from Canada: JWT Toronto placed stickers on the covers of magazines in doctor’s waiting rooms, sponsored by Purell, a hand sanitizer from Pfizer. The stickers have a copy like: “Thumbed through by sick people since September 2005, “Gently sneezed on since October 2002″ and “Exposing patients to more than germs since November 1998.” The idea is really good, but I have my reasonable doubts over the fact that patients are made aware of the fact that they actually are exposed to even more ‘germs’ than they already have been. On the other hand it’s a good thing because it also makes people aware of the fact that they need to wash their hands more often and after all, this week is national wash-your-hands week in the US. Just so you know.

Purell 1

Purell 1

WashYourHands is a campaign to improve hand hygiene, sponsored by Purell – a hand sanitizer from Pfizer. People could read the issue date through a hole in the stickers, giving the headline a bite, and reinforcing hand hygiene. Then washyourhands.tv trumpets Purell as a quick, convenient germ killer.

Underwear Goes Inside The Pants

18 Sep

A little while ago I was reading on Bert Van Wassenhove’s blog and he pointed to this very amusing song on a MySpace page dedicated to Lazy Boy’s track. The lyrics are hilarious. You used to be able to download the song, but apparently that’s not possible anymore. I’m pretty sure you can still find it on some file-sharing network if you look for it. You can still listen to it. I’ve posted the lyrics after the jump. Have a nice Monday :) And by the way: Happy birthday, Bert. Here’s some linklove :)

Road Safety

16 Sep

Here’s some ads with prevention purposes. Public service ads against drinking and driving. I’ve received them a while ago by e-mail, but never got to blogging them. They stacked up and now I’ve got about 30 ads of which I don’t have credits, so please fill me in if you know who made them, then I can add it to the post. Here’s the first load. I’ll spread it out, so in the near future you’ll see some more.

“Johnnie Walked. If you drive, you don’t drink.”
“RED, For more responsible driving”
“Visit www.red.be and find out more about the many road safety initiatives of the non-profit-making organisation RED.”

RoadCross D&D

RoadCross is a Swiss organisation for road safety and prevention. This ad ran in March 2006 and is presumably made by students of the Zürcher Hochschule Winterthur, where it’s displayed in the online magazine.

More Absolut

15 Sep

Damn, I should read all my e-mails before I get to blogging cool stuff that people send me. I missed these two ads from Absolut, also done by TBWA. I’m not so fond of the Absolut Peak ad, because it’s a little dull, but the Absolut Truth ad is right on the spot. That’s one good and powerful idea, and very well executed. Definitely cool.

Absolut Peak

Absolut Truth

Thanks, Ben.
