Signature Power

25 Jun 2006

This ad for Amnesty International also received a Bronze Lion in the Press category at Cannes. I like the powerful image. It’s really telling more stories than you might expect on first glance. The copy for this ad is “a signature is more powerful than you think” and on the wall you’ll see a door to freedom, created by the many signatures Amnesty collected. Nice visual.

Bayer Markets Kids

24 Jun 2006

Also in for Bronze in the Press category at this year’s Cannes yumminosity are these four print ads from Bayer. As weird as it seems to market drugs (medicines, naturally) for kids, these ads put the youngsters in adult positions, magnifying the problems they can have to hilarious proportions. It’s certainly not the point to market kids ‘as such’, but more likely the parents. So the title of this post might be a bit misleading, but the point is nobody actually knows what possible reason kids might have to grow a headache. So, picturing typical adult situations in which a beer might do more damage than it might actually heal, Bayer proposes their actron pediatric analgesic (pfwiew, what a name – imagine ordering it at the drug store). I’ve never heard of it, but if it tastes as good as the ads look funny, we might have a good product, no?

Modern Web Design

24 Jun 2006

You just got to love this pie-chart PoisonedMinds came up with:

Modern Web Design

I know some folks who’re really going to like this :) | via Netlash

Update: Michel is quite right when he says that IE6 has been around for a few years already. I myself have never had problems with IE. The only thing I had problems with was getting my tables straight in Opera. And yeah, there was always a thing with the < br > in Firefox. But IE has always been ok. Despite what the graph says.

Two Pieces Of Paradise

24 Jun 2006

These three ads for Bounty scored Bronze in the Press Winners category at Cannes. I hadn’t seen them yet, but I really like the concept. The way the images are divided into sections that have the size and form of a piece of Bounty relates directly to the duo-pack in which the product is sold. I like the way the ads ‘feel’ like they’re already classics or vintage because of the worn-off colors (bleached by the hand of time and sunlight) and the old bathing suits. It gives the campaign a high degree of ‘postcardlike’ cuteness. Bounty, the chocolate-coconut sweet bar, has always promoted its exotism and to actually have a complete image of paradise, you need to add the product. Cool visuals. Nice creative thinking.

Origin Of Coolz0r

23 Jun 2006

Mister Houtlust asked what the meaning of the name ‘Coolz0r’ is. From between my books (I’m still studying for the exam of governmental communication I have tomorrow morning) I’ll explain where it all comes from. You see ‘Coolz0r’ can be divided into two words, namely ‘cool’ and ‘z0r’. Here’s a dictionaric approach to those words and we’ll start with ‘cool’:

— Main Entry : cool
Pronunciation : ‘kül
Function: adjective
1 : moderately cold – lacking in warmth
2 a : marked by steady dispassionate calmness and self-control (…)
c of jazz : marked by restrained emotion and the frequent use of counterpoint
3 — used as an intensive (…)
4 : marked by deliberate effrontery or lack of due respect or discretion

5 : facilitating or suggesting relief from heat

6 a : of a color : producing an impression of being cool; (…)
b of a musical tone : relatively lacking in timbre or resonance
7 : slang : very good, excellent, wicked, fashionable, nifty

For ‘Coolz0r’, I chose numbers 6a (for the design) and 7 (for the name).
Now for the suffix ‘z0r’:

— Main Entry : z0r (z-zero-r)
Pronunciation : ‘zor
Function: adjective suffix
1 : of, relating to, or being — chiefly in adjectives indicating nationality or ethnic groups

The suffix ‘z0r’ isn’t listed in the dictionary. However and although it does exist, I did not invent it. It comes from a geeky world filled with nerds and gamers. It was used a lot, years ago when I was still a daily fragcat in the first edition of Battlefield 1942 and the Desert Combat mod built upon it. I haven’t had time to game and I sort of grew out of it, but I thought it looked nice to combine those two to create my nickname. The suffix ‘z0r’ is to be interpreted as the suffix ‘ish’ as it is used in ‘British’, ‘Turkish’ and so on.

When someone or something is ‘Coolz0r’ he or she (or it) belongs to ‘the tribe’ of cool and fashionable things and people.

The true name of this blog is Marketing Thoughts. Coolz0r is my nickname but at the same time it also stands for the excellent and nifty things. ‘Coolz0r – Marketing Thoughts’ should therefor be interpreted as ‘really cool marketing thoughts’. It’s a collection of marketing things and ideas I find on the interweb that truly impress me, of which I think they are of great and extraordinary creativity. The purplish cows that make the difference so to speak.

So. There you have it. Now back to my books. :)

Listr 2.0

22 Jun 2006

Welcome to the Listr. This post will be updated every time I come across another new name that has an ‘r’ at the end. It seems that it’s really important to have a good and original name first, before you can launch a service in this era of the 2.0 interweb. Also don’t forget to be in beta for a rather long time. It really gives the users the impression that you’re actually trying to make it work.

To those start-ups that haven’t decided on a name yet: do something with an ‘A’, so you’ll end up on top of the list. It’s good for your own visibility. Anyone who makes a list will rank you high. It’ll be the only way to make a difference in the r, r, r-world.

Update [07-01-2006]: I think this is about the most complete ‘r’ archive on the web today! Thanks to everyone who helped me complete the list!

Update [08-22-2006]: 100th name added!

Craprr Is Gone

22 Jun 2006

Jason and I decided to kill craprr.com and redirect the domain to his new blog. We made our point, we had our slogan. ‘Loser-generated content’ is still all around, we just don’t have time to save up on the bullshit we come across and reblog it over at craprr.

We had a good laugh, and yeah, there was quite some traffic. But really. There’s other and more important things to attend to right now. Instead of letting craprr die and stop posting while the blog was still live, we decided it would be better to put an end to it right away.

The only thing I took with me is the great Listr. A list of all ‘rrrrrr’ 2.0 companies that recently popped up in the slipstream of Flickr and thought the ‘r’ was a necessary item to be able to qualify for ‘being 2.0′. I’ll blog the entire list later tonight in a new post, because I still have to add some new things to it. The rest wasn’t even worth taking over because we didn’t call it ‘Loser-generated content’ for its good quality. Au contraire, my dearest friends. :)

If you were a visitor at craprr.com, glad we had you in there for a laugh. We hope you had some fun, so did we. But now it’s time to move on.

Although we thought we came up with the slogan ‘Loser-generated content’, somebody beat us to it. Alex Barnett already mentioned it in November 2005. Damn. We never even Googled the phrase untill now. :) Ah well. Whatever.
