Stress

22 Jun 2006

Okay. I failed one exam back in January. In the Belgian system, you can come a few points short, and the exam council can decide to let you pass anyway. Well, in my case it wasn’t quite possible, so I figured I had to redo it in August. But since I started working already, that would be a problem, because I can’t be employed full-time and at the same time be a student.

It would be great if I could sign up ‘for real’ at i-merge (where I work now, as a student) in July and still be graduated, instead of having to wait until the end of August or the beginning of September. So I sent an email to the exam council and asked if I could redo the test in June. I didn’t hear from them for a while, and I figured it’d be an August kind of thing.

Well today at at 4 PM while I was at work, I received a phone call and they said I could redo the exam. Saturday morning at 9 AM. That’s 36 hours from now, not counting any sleep. The book for this subject (governmental communication) is 280 pages. The course is about 80 or 90 pages. Ummm.

On the one hand I like it if they try to help me graduate in June instead of in August. Really. On the other hand I think they should’ve called me sooner.

This kind of means the blogging will be low. I’ll post something in the morning, and something when I take a break. I’ll be back on full speed somewhere on Saturday.

Lynx Billions Of Bikinis

22 Jun 2006

Dave caught the unique peek of the Lynx Billions of Bikinis commercial that aired right before England played against Sweden. the clip was broadcasted on ITV1, and it is said it won’t be shown anywhere else. Ever. How nice of Dave to have put it online. I’ll mirror his file here. Thanks to AdRants for the pointer. There’s a mini-version of the clip available at the Lynx website.

Somewhere in March I posted a clip of the Lynx Jet, a commercial that was part of a campaign that had its own website: lynxjet.com. This campaign got an award in Cannes for Best Integrated Promotional Campaign. Congrats to the LOWE HUNT agency in Sydney. Nice work.

Update: BriefBlog has a nice roundup of the Lynxjet campaign with very cute pictures of the promo team and screenshots of the website.

Asian Soccer Babes

21 Jun 2006

A little while ago, a Flemish site posted pictures of Asian Soccer Babes. That site rebranded the images and removed the original message and never credited the author or source. Other sites thought the Flemish site was the source and started linking to it. I think it’s a shame claiming other people’s work like this. It’s lame. As you can see (if you go follow the links above), the original message has been deliberately removed. How hard can it be to link to a source? If you’re editing the pictures, then at least give some linklove.

These images were featured on flickrbabes.com, which probably is where the Flemish blokes got their juice. They were originally posted on a Chinese blog, and then uploaded to Flickr by Steven Young.

Santini47 says the Chinese on the picture means “Mr. Fashion” and the rest of the words on Flickr roughly mean: “The Wild Animal Soccer of Mr. Fashion” (or “…The Fashion Gentleman”) or something alike. These photos also appeared on a Nanjing blog watermarked by a certain “Leesum” (which means bereavement). Santini47 thinks he has a lead to these pictures for Esquire China’s June Edition, but a subscription is needed, so there’s no link. Too bad.

MarketingSherpa Awards

21 Jun 2006

See, umm. Apparently I’m nominated for MarketingSherpa Reader’s Choice Blog & Podcasting Awards 2006. As much as I like that, seeing the fellow-shortlisted blogs I have to compete against makes me realize that I should be lucky to even have my humble blog in that list at all. I think it’s really flattering to reside between big names like that, but I don’t really think (or expect) I’ll even make it to the top three.

Other blogs in the category ‘Advertising’:

As you can see, there are many blogs in the list that have been around from way before I popped up in the blogosphere. A few of them are even in my favorites list, I check them a couple of times a day. I’m not going to make myself believe I could possibly win this, instead I’m going to feel really great about the fact I was nominated in the first place. Thanks for reading Marketing Thoughts.

Thai Privacy Thougths

21 Jun 2006

Hmm. I don’t quite know what to think of this campaign. I can’t even translate what’s written, but it doesn’t appear to be branded. I don’t see a logo or a brand name. I don’t even know if it’s a marketing campaign. What I do know is that this kind of makes you feel not so ‘at ease’ when you have to go number 1 or number 2. It’s not that new either, I’ll post a list of ‘bathroom activity’ below the images so you can have an overview of the ways they’re invading your privacy in your most intimate moments.
The first series (with the row of girls) were placed in the mens room. The second and third picture were taken in the ladies room.

Try to relax. Really. Don't let us disturb you.

Say

Well hello there, missy

Thanks, Jesse

Social Marketing University

21 Jun 2006

I know it’s a bit weird to a) post something here about an event across the ocean that I won’t attend to and b) post it moths before it’s happening, but I’m doing Nedra a favor by posting it. So, if you’re anywhere from around the Golden State and you have some time to spare in September, go ahead and join the event. You won’t regret it. You’ll be all socialized and it’s a great opportunity to network some more. Say hi to Nedra from me if you see her :)

September 18 – 19, 2006
8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
UCLA Conference Center
University of California, Los Angeles
Westwood, California

Presented by Weinreich Communications

How do you help people adopt behaviors that will make them healthier and better off? How can you create positive social change?

At Social Marketing University, you will move beyond the usual educational approach to changing health and social behaviors. Using social marketing, you will learn how to persuade individuals to take action for change by addressing the values, needs and desires that motivate them. It’s about understanding and connecting with your audience by applying the same effective marketing tools that companies like Nike and Apple use.

Join Nedra Kline Weinreich for this two-day training on the beautiful UCLA campus in Los Angeles. By the time you leave, you will have an effective social marketing strategy for your own program and the skills to implement it immediately.

Early registration by July 31 includes a $100 discount, and each additional person from the same organization will receive another $50 off of the registration fee. Students also get a huge discount.

For all the details about the training agenda, fees and housing accommodations, check out the Social Marketing University information page.

Blog Of The Week

21 Jun 2006

Hey, this is nice. Apparently I’m ‘blog of the week’ over at Sunny Man’s Blog. They even wrote some nice things about me. I’m honored, really. Thanks !

Coolz0r – Marketing Thoughts is a blog that’s updated regularly by a bloke who resides in Belgium. He talks about different advertising campaigns that big a little companies alike do. He dives into detail and explains every part of the campaigns explaining why they’ve done what they have and what the effect is. As well as using his own image library of the campaigns he comments on posts from other alike blogs. [...]

The author updates the site regularly and you’re guarenteed at least a few funny images or copy during the week. I’ve been reading it for just a couple months but I’ve found it interesting, insightful and very, very funny sometimes. Please go to his blog, start from the first post and go through. I guarantee you’ll like what you read and see.

See, it’s stuff like this that makes it all worth it. Screw the stats (for a moment). This is why I like to blog. Thank you, Sunny Man. I really appreciate it !!!

I’m Just Big-Boned

21 Jun 2006

Overweight is becoming a real problem. Obesity rates in children continue to climb. Eating more and exercising less are the two most commonly mentioned culprits. This campaign by BBDO Werbeagentur tries to create awareness for this problem in a humoristic way. You can’t laugh though, because it’s a serious problem. :) (I can’t help it. Just the thought of the cute fat kid on the swing, the moment it cracked, makes me smile) – Copy for this ad: “Children’s overweight is a growing problem. Help them lose weight”.
And no, ‘fat camp’ doesn’t count as an option.

Zentru Fat Kids

But seriously, tune in for this:

It’s estimated that 10% of children, or at least 155 million youngsters, are overweight or obese. It is most severe in the United States, where the prevalence of obese children aged 5 to 17 is about 10% and more than 30% are overweight. Ten percent to 20% of children in Northern Europe have prevalence to being overweight, and once a health problem for the industrialized world, is now spreading to developing countries.

Along with the increase in childhood obesity we’re beginning to see an epidemic of adult onset, or type 2, diabetes in children 9 to 12. If that child develops diabetes before they’re 14 years of age they are shortening their life span by 17 to 27 years. This has reached such a state that this may be the first generation in which the parents outlive the children.
