Curb Art

11 Jul 2007

I’ve had a few pictures floating around for a while about 3D art in the streets that was used for commercial purposes, and I’m really quite ‘pro’ this form of advertisement because it often makes a large grey surface come to life and it really captures the attention of the passers-by. I didn’t really know if I should post them here, but then I came across this very super cool ‘making of’ clip for a brand of skin products called Aveeno. Their tagline ‘positively ageless’ inspired this artist to come up with a drawing of the fountain of youth, a mythical object that’s been searched for throughout centuries but it was never found. Below the movie I’ll add the other examples of curb art for different types of brands. Hopefully more people turn to this form of ‘ad-art’ because personally I’m pretty certain it’s a very good eye catcher.

Silverjet Airlines

10 Jul 2007

In case you were thinking that people were sold out of ideas to diversify the market segment of passengers for airplanes… the answer is no. Silverjet Airlines is focusing on a female audience by using their ‘women-only’ toilet facilities as a unique selling proposition to get more women to book low fare business class flights between London & New York. The only thing I’m suprized about is the fact that the angle of approach that is used here is really significant for an all-round 100% typically male brain. I really wonder if this would even appeal to one tenth of the target female audience. Pretty sure it could lead to an increase of testosteron on the plane, and specifically around the bathroom area… hoping to see a glance of what the commercial promises. But also very pretty sure at least 80% of the women will not feel tempted to book a seat when they watch this clip.

The Wind

10 Jul 2007

I really like this commercial. It’s totally not ‘pushy’, it doesn’t want you to buy anything… and still it’s so captive and touching. The main character reminds me of Charlie Chaplin or Hardy from Laurel & Hardy, because of his expressive and mime-like make-up and the funny way he’s dressed. I really think this approach is very well done for the purpose of the campaign. It caught my attention from the beginning to the end, and I think the story line is very keen too. The commercial is made for Epuron and has been produced in association with the German ministry of environmental affairs.

Pop Rocks

OMG. Really. This is ummm… waaaaay beyond whatever an agency would propose for a brand. But it’s out there. And it’s ummm way beyond what you would think is acceptable. This is just passed the border of “hell yeah let’s launch this”. The creative director that approved this must have been on drugs (or porn) OR when it’s consumer generated, congrats for the cast. Really. I’m speechless. What was it again? Sex sells? Yeah that must be it. => NSFW !

Urban Surfing

21 May 2007

Incredibly kick-ass commercial for Quicksilver. I expect nothing less than seeing this become a trend. Might help the local fishermen on the pier too… They’ll just have to scoop the fish out of the water instead of waiting for hours on end for the little swimmers to bite the worm. But no, seriously, this is pretty damn cool stuff for the Quicksilver brand. I’ll see if I can dig up others… maybe there’s a sequel.

Lazer Helmets

27 Apr 2007

A flowerpot falls to its death, but right before it sees its life flash by before its eyes… A new commercial by for Lazer Helmets, with an edgy twist. Pretty stunning and a very nice perspective on the subject. I really like the idea of seeing the life from the object’s point of view, instead of from the victim – which is usually the case. Check it out. (The final shot is filmed at 3000fps, how wicked is that?)

Cold Farts

20 Apr 2007

I love this supercool 3D animated commercial for Air Virgosol… perfect starter for a Friday morning… It doesn’t really contribute to the greatest brand image ever, but I’m pretty sure you’ll know what to do the next time there’s a forest fire near you. Better keep these in the survival kit in the trunk…

Turtle Time

16 Apr 2007

Brazilian interactive agency Ginga launched a massive urban projection for the promotion of the new TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) movie. The Tartarugas Ninja (as they are called there) were pictured in a 3D video teaser on a 25-floor building in São Paulo. The teaser shows the 4 turtles saving a woman from a burning building and afterwards they disappear in the night and the regular movie trailer is shown. There’s a dedicated blog out called EstamosChegando (We Are Arriving), which lists up all the campaigns and actions around the TMNT release. The guerrilla part of this campaign included shurikens that were left between car doors, typical ‘cartoonish’ criminals out in the streets and url-branded pizza boxes. The official (Brazilian) movie site has a consumer generated part in which they call for entries of home made movies. For the winner(s), an Xbox 360 is the main prize and their movie is being included on the “Ninja Turtles – the Return” DVD in the ‘Extras’. Sweet!
