Budweiser Archive

26 Apr 2006

Over the past nine months I’ve been uploading plenty of commercials to YouTube. In that archive, there are a lot of Budweiser and Bud Light ads and I thought It’d be nice to list ‘em up. I really like those commercials, because they’re always very funny and totally off the hook. I’ll add one before the jump, and the other 20+ after, so don’t be surprized if the page takes a little while to load because it’s a lot of content.

Yahoo TV Launched

26 Apr 2006

So, I’m waiting for Google to come after this but in the meanwhile Yahoo kicked off their Go-TV and from the first reviews I’ve read I don’t think it’s an understatement to say that it really opens up a lot of opportunities. Not only for advertisers, but also for consumers.

From the Unofficial Yahoo Blog:

Instead of huddling around your 17″ monitor and cluttered desk to view your Y! Photo album of the latest family gathering, you can show them from the comfort of your TV viewing room. You can also see pictures from on-the-fly Flickr searches. You can also play DVD’s or saved video files on your computer and watch them on your TV! Kind of eliminates the need for the ol’ DVD-player don’t it? And there’s a lot of Yahoo! Premium content in audio and video form that is easily accessible through Yahoo! Go – TV.
There’s more features to discover at the Y! Go – TV site.

IKEA Interactive: Office Planner

26 Apr 2006

IKEA is on a roll lately, so it seems. Punching the world with the outdoor showcase in Japan and a screamer ad are just a few of the ways they’ve caught my attention. Now Download Squad points to the new IKEA 2006 Office planner, a handy interactive tool that shows you just how good you can use the space you have available.

See your new office on the screen before you see it in reality, with the IKEA Office planner.

Our planning tool lets you move in a whole new office without getting out of your chair. Drag and drop pieces into a layout, view them in a 3-D view, try different colors, print your design, and see the total cost of your new office from IKEA.

The tool is free for download and apparently Windows only.

Project Z: Help Needed

26 Apr 2006

For my project, I’m looking for two things to complete my setup for the Internal Knownledge Network I’m currently building. It’s my final project for school, my graduation project, however you want to call it.

I’m looking for a tool to make real-time live tagging possible. I’ve just integrated a slug in the post-interface where you can add tags, then there’s an AJaX tagsearch engine connected to those tags. Now I’d like to add something to it that would allow other people than the one who originally posted the message to add tags to that post without having to log in.

Example: Person A posts an idea, links it up with some clients by tagging it with the names of those clients. Person B reads the entry and thinks the idea could also be useful to some other projects of which person A didn’t think of. Now it should be possible for person B to add tags to the existing tags, without going into the ‘edit’ mode. So I’m looking for a sort of form field that can be added at the end of the listed tags, where anyone within the network can add more tags. Those tags should then be a) sent to the tag archive, b) added to the AJaX tagsearch and cloud en c) either appear in real time or after the page is reloaded.

The other thing I’m looking for is ‘User Profiles’ that can be extended. Right now every author has a page which comes standard in WordPress. I’d like to add more fields to that page and extract some data from it to display it on another page. The profiles should be public so that people in the network can ‘check’ each other. I’d like the data to be extractable because I want to have something like a birthday notification or favorite movie of the week… stuff like that. The user profiles should either be the existing author pages, but then in an extended and editable form, or some sort of plug which can work with WordPress.

UPDATE: I’m modding the profiles.php page and I’m creating extra slugs. I think I’m getting there if I can make the DB remember what I typed into the slugs because when I click ‘update’ the fields are blank again. If I look into this some more I think I’ll be able to fix it. That leaves just the first remark to be solved, but any tips in user profiles are still welcome.

Any pointers? – Thanks already.

55 Ways To Have Fun With Google

26 Apr 2006

I’m almost finished proofreading Philipp’s book about Google, which is cunningly titled “55 Ways To Have Fun With Google”. I had a great time reading it and there’s a lot of cool things about Google that I didn’t know yet which Philipp explained and now make more sense. I was surprized to find out how many Google Games there are to be played and indeed, Google is more than just a search engine. It’s a source of happiness, fantasy and fun. Google can become a way of life, not just a tool to help you look for answers.

Excerpt from “Chapter 30: Ten signs You Are Addicted To Google”:

  • When people talk to you, you try to optimize their keywords.
  • Your reply to “how are you?” is “I’m feeling lucky”, combined with a clicking gesture.
  • You are convinced that “What’s your PageRank?” is a good pick-up line.

I especially liked chapter 42, the science-fiction interlude. Truly, inside Philipp hides a great novelist. Of course it’s not the Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, and no, it’s nothing like 1984 either… but it comes close. I was really excited while I read it and the tales intrigued me. I couldn’t let go of the book once I started a chapter. I even read while I was walking home from the train station because it was so captive that I couldn’t just close the book in the middle of a story.

What are Google Robots?

Google Robots are our human-like machines that walk the earth to record information. They do no harm, and they do not invade your privacy.

The book is a must-have. If you like, love or hate Google, this is what you need to read. You’ll never regret having ordered your copy, but you’ve got to wait a little more because it isn’t for sale yet. If you follow Philipp’s Google Blogoscoped or 55fun.com you’ll definitely see the date of launch being posted when it’s ready.

I asked Philipp what his main reason was to start writing the book and what he learned:

I don’t know exactly what triggered my decision to start writing this book. I guess it was inevitable because my head is overflowing with Google trivia, which I collected in 3 years of writing a Google blog. I also wanted to give people something to take with them on the beach, onto the airplane, or whenever else you’re not in front of a PC. It was a lot of fun writing the book.

As for what I learned… – I learned a lot about Open Office Writer, but finally had to buy Microsoft Word and convert the document. The sad truth is that when you’re using an “exotic” tool, even though it’s free, you’re likely to run into problems with online tools and help sites… most help pages online will be about the most popular tool, Word, and most online converters (like Lulu.com’s self-publishing book converter) will also only support the most popular tool.

The book is rated ‘G’ for Googlish.

iTunes Ads

25 Apr 2006

Randy points to an interesting read on Advertising Age:

Coming soon to iTunes: ads. Apple — a brand that prides itself on the purity of the user experience — will soon put up billboards on its popular iTunes service, according to content partners who have been briefed on the plan. The introduction of visual ads could be the first step to allowing ads in other content areas or on iPods.

American Dad VS Family Guy

25 Apr 2006

The ultimate battle in the category ‘my favorite toonz’. To promote the launch of the first American Dad DVD and the third Family Guy DVD, this (branded) advergame has been released upon the masses. American Dad has been voted to my favorite cartoon ever since the launch on the BBC somewhere last year. (I was the only voter so it wasn’t that difficult) – I’m addicted :) – In this timewaster, every cartoon personality has its own combo controls, which you can trigger while fighting. The best fight ever in this game is to team up Stewie against Klaus, the evil goldfish. I do miss Steve and Francine in the American Dad camp, and Meg and Brian in the Family Guy camp. What happened? Shortage on the budget? Maybe you can unlock them somewhere later in the game, I don’t know.
