Tangible Movie Editing For Kids

12 Mar 2006

Check out this new concept for movie editing by Japanese media artist couple Mika Miyabara and Tatsuo Sugimoto’s to help children understand the process of editing.

  1. Film your story with a digital camera.
  2. Connect your camera to a computer with Movie Cards software installed.
  3. The software will print out the movie cards. These small cards show the first image of each sequence taken from your camera.
  4. Lay your cards on the table and arrange them in which ever order you want them to be.
  5. Each card has a little QR-code or bar-code, so you can use a scanner or bar-code reader to beep-in your movie cards in the order you decided.
  6. Preview on your monitor! Done.

I really like the concept. Kids nowadays might be very digitally equipped and computer-savvy, but there’s also a large group that doesn’t have the ability to work with all the software that comes with the electronic toys. Handy cards like these not only teach them about the editing process, the cards also make it very easy to turn the abstract editing process into something comprehensible.

Puzzle Alarm Clock

01 Mar 2006

This is a cute gadget I came across. Every morning when I wake up from the buzzing sound of my alarm clock -or the tuner, depending on the mood I was in the night before- I hit the snooze button, and every so often I just turn down the volume only to find myself awake later as planned because I went back to the land of dreams. Here comes the solution to this messy morning action:

Clock Puzzle

It wakes you up by firing four puzzle pieces up in the air, and then it is your task to get the pieces and put them back in the alarm clock – it won’t turn off until then.

That gives you the time to do something active and actually wake up. Sweet.

The Whirlpool You Need

24 Feb 2006

Whoah! I just want this so bad in my house. This goes on the ‘one day’ wishlist. I’ll be all wrinkled and shrunken, but I’ll take a bath every day. Now if I could just have a waterproof floating keyboard and mouse, I’ll blog straight from this tub !

The La Scala bathtub treats you to the ultimate home theater surround and entertainment system right in the luxury of your own whirlpool bath. With plenty of room for side-by-side bathing, you can nestle in for a long soak and the finest motion picture experience ever imagined. Thoughtful touches, such as a floating remote control and ten fully adjustable jets for the ultimate in head-to-toe relaxation. An ideal complement to your master bathroom.

This is the coolest bathtub I’ve ever seen ! Connect your computer to this multimedia wonderland and you’re off ! Clean-Geeks-R-Us :)

Chocolate XBox 360

20 Feb 2006

A few weeks ago, I was at Microsoft’s Belux headquarters, and I’ve written they had this very cool chocolate XBox 360 on display in their entrance hall. Kris Hoet, the guy we met back then, has sent me some really nice pictures of it. This is so cool ! Thanks Kris ! You Rock !

The pictures were taken by some colleagues of Kris. Kudos to them. The chocolate XBox 360 was made especially for the X05 annual event in Amsterdam, October last year.

Multi-Touch Interaction Research

09 Feb 2006

Wim just sent me this link to Jefferson Y. Han’s project:

While touch sensing is commonplace for single points of contact, multi-touch sensing enables a user to interact with a system with more than one finger at a time, as in chording and bi-manual operations. Such sensing devices are inherently also able to accommodate multiple users simultaneously, which is especially useful for larger interaction scenarios such as interactive walls and tabletops.

Demo:

Download the Demo Reel for WinMedia .wmv (17mb) or in .mp4 (12mb) for QuickTime.

Check out the Multi-Touch Interaction Research website to learn more.

Jesus Christ Super Store

06 Jan 2006

In the Jesus Christ Super Store, you can buy figurines to replay the entire Bible story, just the way you like it. To make the play multicultural you can also purchase other relgious action figurines like Buddha and the Dalai Lama for the Buddhists; Krishna, Shiva and Ganesh (currently sold out) for the Hindus; Jehova (sold out), Moses (sold out) and Chief Rabbi for the Jews; Allah, The Ayatollah and Islamic Jihad for the Muslims. Funny remark: Allah’s USP is ‘He who may not be shown’, therefor the package is empty although if you believe it He’s really there. The Christians are represented by Jesus Christ, The Pope and God Almighty.

BlueTooth Wireless Trackball

19 Nov 2005

The world’s first bluetooth wireless trackball is a fact.

“The Ball is the result of a three-year research and design effort into the way people use trackballs. [...] The Ball is much smaller than other ‘regular size’ trackballs. While keeping an industry standard ball size, we managed to shrink the housing about 30% to 50% smaller than normal. Why?… so that you can comfortably lay your hand on the top of The Ball, and your fingers will easily curl all the way around to reach the front-mounted scroll wheel. The Ball has left and right buttons, a scroll wheel, and a scroll wheel button. It’s a ‘pair it and work’ device for any Bluetooth enabled Mac or Win XP system."

Chwang Yi delivers the this package for only $69 (58.90 Euro) and it includes The Ball, an USB mini charging cradle, a pair of 750mAh Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable AAA batteries, and instructions and warranty materials. The Ball has a 1-year 100% satisfaction replacement guarantee.
