Multimodal Co-Located Interaction Project

07 Apr 2006

Two days ago I said something about a multi-touch interface that came out of the Mitsubishi Electronic Research Labs. Edward Tse, a doctoral student and one of the authors of that prototype commented on my post and pointed to his website where I found a more complete version of the movie, including a demo of Google Earth. It’s amazing what you can do with this Multimodal Co-located Interaction project.

Turns out the project is a PhD research which is focused on supporting people’s natural interactions over digital surfaces such as large tables and wall displays.

Interaction on a digital table supports face to face collaboration with the added benefits of digital displays (e.g., real time updates, access to the Internet and rich satellite imagery).
Core features of my work include rich whole handed bimanual gestures, speech and gesture input, and multi user interaction.
Application areas include tabletop gaming, military command and control, air traffic control and hospital emergency rooms.

MERL Game Table Prototype

05 Apr 2006

Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs came up with this Game Table Prototype in which they demo Warcraft III and show you how you can command characters using your voice and hands. Awesome !

Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories is the North American arm of the Corporate R&D organization of the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. We conduct application motivated basic research and advanced development in computer and communication technologies.

AZERTY Jewelry

30 Mar 2006

The time has come for geek ladies to pay attention. Some wicked mind has discovered you can actually recycle the keys of your keyboard and turn them into some jewelry. I’m waiting for this to get ‘blinged’ so you can actually wear a silver ‘esc’ key that’s stuck with diamonds… now that would be something. Where’s Swarovski when you need them?

Sony DataTile Modular Platform

27 Mar 2006

Looky here what Sony came up with:

The DataTiles system integrates the benefits of two major interaction paradigms: graphical and physical user interfaces. Tagged transparent tiles are used as modular construction units. These tiles are augmented by dynamic graphical information when they are placed on a sensor-enhanced flat panel display. They can be used independently or can be combined into more complex configurations, similar to the way language can express complex concepts through a sequence of simple words.

Apparently it was created in 2001, but I’ve never seen it before. It looks quite funky. Really. Keywords: Interaction techniques, tangible user interfaces, graphical user interfaces, visual language, radio-frequency identification tags.

Interactive RPT Displays

20 Mar 2006

Edigma combines precision cameras for finger tracking, multimedia projectors and transparent material to create interactive window displays called Displax. With Displax you can educate consumers about products and services in a dynamic and memorable way. You can enhance the in-store environment and have the flexibility to update all in-store point-of-sale and messages immediately from one source, but you’re also able to target different audiences in different parts of the store at different times of the day. (RPT means Rear-Projection Transparent)

The website has some nice videos online (apparently Rabobank in the Netherlands already has a few active displays)

Mixed Reality Interface

15 Mar 2006

Yet another beautiful integrated interface. I think it was presented at CeBit, and it’s created by Kommerz, an Austrian company. You can find more details about it here, in German.

Uruk Video Machine

13 Mar 2006

French based VJs, Antoine Legras and Stan Cixous are Uruk Videomachine, a collective focused on monumental video projections. This specific projection measures 750m² (1 162 502.33 square inch).

The Video show was 15 minute long, and was performed two times a day for a period of 10 days, for more than 10.000 people. Antoine said that the message of the show was “the power of imagination” and that putting this together, took a lot of work, for the projection they used 4 video projectors (10.000 lumens each) and 4 computers using a custom made software to synch them all up. The way they incorporated the architecture details with the animation is what makes this project so beautiful and inspiring.

Store Of The Future

13 Mar 2006

The intelligent dressing room, shown by Metro Group at CeBit in Hannover, Germany, scans your measurements and lets you see on a projection screen how a piece will look on you. The technology is part of the Metro Group’s Future Store Initiative, which brings companies together to envision a technology-driven store of tomorrow. – This could be the next wave for advertising billboards in the streets. Suppose you’re passing by a interactive screen that scans your measurements to then display how you look with the promoted product… (would be hilarious if a man walks by the billboard for bikinis though)
