Video Ads On Your Mobile

22 Jan 2006

The New York Times had an article this week, discussing the possibilities of small video messages on mobile phones. Introducing: Right-In-Your-Face (opt-in) advertisement.

Television-style advertising is coming to a mobile phone near you. It is part of a broader push by marketers to create a new generation of “up close and personal” ads by delivering video, audio, banner displays and text clips over a device carried by most American adults.

Marketers said they were particularly excited about the prospect of eventually using cellphones, many of which are equipped with global positioning systems, to send ads to consumers based on their location. [...]

By law, carriers are not allowed to divulge information on a subscriber’s location unless that individual gives permission. One idea being floated by carriers and advertisers is to offer consumers incentives, like reduced monthly phone fees, if they agree to receive ads. [...]

In March, Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel plan to test how consumers react to short video ads on their phones. But the carriers, fearful of upsetting customers, said they were not planning to deploy this broadly.

The healthy fear of backfire from consumers is (for now) keeping the carriers to scale this to another level. But still, the idea is there and eventually we won’t be able to avoid this. Many consumers will fall for price-sensitive actions and if a 10 second clip will help you cut your calling costs… why not? I just hope it’ll only be when you access a browser for instance, because if you really need to make a vital call, those ten seconds you spend waiting for the ad to end might make the difference between life and death. Let’s hope the emergency numbers will be preserved from ads when carriers decide to implement this ‘new’ marketing tactics.

“This has to be approached delicately because there’s a fine line between adding value to a customer and intruding,” said Pragnesh Shah, vice president of product innovation at Sprint Nextel. Still, Mr. Shah said he saw enormous potential in delivering advertising on a device that is always on and carried everywhere. [...]

In theory, ads could be made even more personal. A message might say: “Use this card in the store coming up on your left and you’ll get x-percent off,” said Michael Lao, MasterCard’s vice president for global media and new channels. But this futuristic feature would be possible only if carriers developed a system in which subscribers could choose to be tracked.

Ricky Gervais’ Countdown

22 Jan 2006

By Monday, when the 8th episode will have launched, there’ll only be four podcasts left in the series of 12. You just got to tune in to this because it’s so worth it. Too bad you can’t download the first podcasts anymore because once you’ve tuned in you’ll feel so addicted you just need them to live on.

I’ve already linked to this on Dec. 6th when the first show was online, and it got better and better every single time. There is no funnier thing than Ricky. I absolutely adore his sense of humor and if it was possible to buy a piece of his brain, I would eat it, in the hopes it would make me as crazy and brilliant as he is. I know it wouldn’t happen, but still. If he didn’t live in the UK, I’d probably go to every on-stage performance he’d give. Dammit. Why can’t he come on tour here in Belgium?

Today I’m listening to the seventh podcast which according to the introduction/description would be the episode “in which Ricky, Steve and Karl discuss… The pictorial canonisation of St Karl the Bewildered; how fingers that do dishes can feel soft as your face; sound advice on maintaining good neighbourly relations; Karl’s choice alter ego; the philosophical truth that is ‘cogito ergo Karl’; sowing the seeds of doom; medical technology in the 21st century; monkey news.”

The fear that they actually might stop making the podcasts when they’ve reached episode 12 is getting more real every week. We can’t let this happen. They must come back. It’s a legacy we must carry to our future. If there could be some sort of time resistant box they shove into the ground, please let it contain all of these episodes.

Tune in on Monday when they release episode 8. You just have to.

Ricky Gervais by Ray Burmiston

I learned today that Plato actually died from an egg. You see, in ancient Greece, there were huge birds that dropped eggs on rocks, and apparently Plato had a big shiny hairless head. When Plato was walking on the beach, some giant bird flew over, thought it was a rock and dropped an egg on Plato’s head. That’s how he died. :) This podcast series rewrites history in a way it should have happened. You just have to adore this. Truly. Wicked.

If you don’t love him by now then you’re obviously not going to chip in for his statue neither, which makes this entire post useless to you. Please carry on then, and live your dull life elsewhere. :)

Adidas Quiz On Google Earth

21 Jan 2006

The Sputnik Agency down under developed a keen football quiz or Adidas Australia, using Google Earth. Via the +10 playoffs you can download a .kmz file that opens up the Google Earth interface.

Once you have downloaded Google Earth (if you didn’t have it already) you can participate in this game. Grand prize is the 2006 Adidas World Cup Matchball, signed by Harry Kewell. Questions are illustrated by the countries Google Earth points to.

Adidas Game

A cool flash animation under the globe/map shows your progress in the quiz.

E2

When you answer a question right, you move on to the next one. If your answer is wrong, you’re taken a step back and you need to answer an extra question about the player you just discovered. It’s possible you go back to 0 and have to start all over.

The first three answers to get you on your way :

1. Ballack
2. Kaka
3. Beckham

Ford Fleet Viral

21 Jan 2006

A viral campaign by Ford to promote it’s fleet cars and conditions was recently released in Belgium. On the website ‘ikbenmijnjobbeu.be’ (translated : I’m bored at work) you can download three funny clips from typical office situations, download posters to inform your colleagues or send preformatted emails to your CEO. There’s also a game you can download and play, and when you press any key, it hides the game and opens up a spreadsheet with some numb corporate info. Very amusing, very entertaining.

Some questions to motivate your employer to check out the Ford Fleet conditions are :

“Mister CEO, was that your wife or your secretary last night in your office?”

“Mister CEO, can I do you a favor with this list of employees who always show up too late?”

“Mister CEO, can I do you a favor by revealing the identity of the person who slashed your 4 tires recently?”

Wal-Mart & Worker’s Rights

20 Jan 2006

We all knew that Wal-Mart was a special store with special policies, but I’ve been sent to this link and it kind of made me wonder about how far an employer can actually go to avoid having to deal with some sort of union that represents the rights of the employees. It’s actually is even worse than it looked like. Tune in and be amazed of the guts this merchant displays:

Wal-Mart

When Wal-Mart employees stand up for themselves and try to form a union, they face threats, propaganda, discrimination, intimidation, and even firings in retaliation. Learn more about Wal-Mart’s unionbusting practices on the American Rights at Work website:

  • An entire Wal-Mart store in Jonquière, Quebec successfully formed a union. But rather than negotiate with the employees for decent wages, affordable health care, and a respectable work environment, Wal-Mart shut down the store. Click here to read more.
  • A large number of academics have raised their concern over Wal-Mart’s decision to close the store in Jonquière, Quebec. Click here for the list of academics who signed a statement calling on Wal-Mart to respect human rights and to conform to international standards.
  • A Wal-Mart worker in Alaska mentioned “the need to have a union” to a co-worker. After being interrogated by the store’s management, the worker was fired. Read his story.

NewsBump

20 Jan 2006

In NewsBump you can choose stories from either the U.S., Australia or the United Kingdom to fine-tune your news even better. The idea seems a little like Digg or other aggregators based on social participation, where a story is being submitted by a user and then gains importance the more people think it’s really worth reading and vote it up the ladder.

NewsVump

NewsBump is a news service with a twist. A typical news service has a faceless editor deciding what’s interesting and important for readers. NewBump allows readers to decide for themselves. Users of this site add links to news stories they think are important. They also decide the order in which the stories appear, by “bumping up” their preferred content. The most popular stories then appear at the top of the page.

If you’ve read a story on NewsBump that you think is interesting or important, you can vote for it to be “bumped up” towards the top of the page by clicking on the “bump up!” link next to it. You can only vote for each story once.

Simply hit on the “Submit a story” button. You will be asked to add a title for your story, a link to it, and a short description of it. You will also have to select a category for it to appear under. Please take care to check that the same story hasn’t already been posted. Once submitted, your story will appear on the site, where users can choose whether or not to bump it up.

The SimpsoMaker

20 Jan 2006

Quentin Devine came up with a brilliant animation that lets you create your own Simpsons character. You can customize the head, eyes, nose, hair & body. Then you can add specs or decoration (lipstick etc) and choose a fitting scenery background. Pretty cool !
Best part is : he offers the generator in a .exe file for keepers ! Thanks Quentin ! Great toy !

The SimpsoMaker

Go there and try it, or download the file.

UPDATE :

Apparently the site is down. Here’s a mirror of the file. (.rar, 501kb)
To download : select the Free download, wait 15 seconds, type in the 3-letter captcha and have fun !
