Carnival Of Marketing

24 Jul 2006

This week, the Carnival Of Marketing is going to be hosted at Direct Response Works. The blogpost isn’t online yet, but it’s expected really soon. Next week, July 30th, it’s my turn. I’ll be hosting the Carnival with pleasure. Be sure to send me your links and leads, I’ll take a look at them and inlcude them in the post I’ll be writing.

Submissions can be sent through coolz0r at gmail dot com, and should be no later than Sunday morning 10 AM CET. The post will be online somewhere around 2 PM. (European Time -6 hours equals NewYorkish time, to be clear)

I’m looking forward to your contributions.

Because a lot of people find it difficult to write Coolz0r (c o o l z zero r), you can also send submission to miel at vanopstal dot info. So don’t tell me there was no way to reach me in time :)

Carnival

Rulez:

  1. Don’t submit an old post. The post needs to be from at least the past couple of weeks, and preference will be given to posts from the past week.
  2. Submit posts that are actionable. Tips that people can actually apply will almost always win out over abstract stuff. “How” beats “Why”.
  3. Submit posts that are complete. As a corellary to the above, posts that refer out to articles or other sites for more information, or that have anything to the effect of “Watch this space for more information” are going to be among the first to be cut.
  4. Don’t submit posts that are nothing more than a pitch. It’s possible to sell subtlely within a good, actionable post (see the Joe Vitale example above). But a couple of the submissions were basically an ad for the company’s product. An occasional post like that may work in the context of your blog, but if you think it’s a good idea to submit that for a carnival, you’ve definitely got a thing or two to learn about marketing via blogs.

Peace Is Fragile

24 Jul 2006

This ad for the United Nations is pretty simple and damn strong at the same time. The copy “peace is fragile” combined with the grenade that looks like a Chinese vase from expensive porcelain has a triple meaning. On the one hand, peace is fragile, on the other hand peace is expensive. (damn there’s only two hands…, hard to make a three-way point *switching limbs*) and on the one foot, peace is explosive. Nicely put.

A Point Well Illustrated

23 Jul 2006

Normally I’m not in to politics on this blog. But just for this time I’d like to make an exception, because there’s something that needs to be said. I have to get it off my chest. It’s nothing personal against ‘the Jews’, ‘the Americans’ or ‘the British’. This is a fart in the general direction of the leaders of those countries.

From Jason Kottke:

Independent

In case you’re not that good at recognizing flags and you’ve been off the world for the last decades: Israel, the US and the UK are standing alone in the right frame. That’s a sign.

There’s a lot more cursing and shouting I would like to do. Really. But I’m not going to get into this. I just hope common sense wins this fight. If the war proceeds for much longer, I’ll definitely start a wicked rant about it. But seriously. I’m pissed off because of this entire situation. And you don’t want to read me ranting when I’m pissed off. Trust me.

Museum Of Communism

23 Jul 2006

Some ads for the museum of communism in Prague. Note the sarcasm in the first one, as to where it is located – bottom-right corner ;) – The second one is pretty funny too and I like the wink to the modern times and the BigBrother malaise we have to endure on TV. Perhaps there are more places where communism is on display, I don’t know. I just put them together because they’re about the same topic. The third one is so painfully true.

Levi’s Underwear

23 Jul 2006

I haven’t got credits for this ad either. It was placed behind the goal on a football field (that soccer type of football, not Amercian football). Too bad I never got to see the big sized image so I could read what’s on the label in the bottom-right corner. It’s a funny place to advertise, and if the camera hits the board at the right angle on the right time, I think a lot of viewers at home will have had their laughs. The ad’s been in my folder for over five weeks, could be a lot older though, but I’ve never seen it appear anywhere to properly credit anyone.

Thanks, Dave.

Corona Billboard

23 Jul 2006

Here’s an older image from my offline archive. I’ve been waiting to post it because there’s no credits available and I’ve been looking to see if I could find some on other blogs, but apparently there’s not much info available about it. I haven’t seen the billboard appear anywhere so maybe it’s that old that I had to digg deeper in someone’s archives. Anyway, if you can fill me in, be my guest. Meanwhile enjoy this deranged ad from Corona:

With Banzai From Milan

23 Jul 2006

Yeah, I know. “It’s not new, seen this before” and yadayada. Well I didn’t see this one before and it was new to me. Not the fact that it was for a martial arts school, but the squashed mosquito they’ve used in it. That really made me laugh. So in my eyes, this is a good ad. It captured my attention, got me thinking about what the f*ck it was trying to say, and then I saw the logo in the bottom-right corner. And it all made sense, leaving me with a smile and a ‘got to try this at home’ feeling.

Ricard Guerrilla

22 Jul 2006

July 21st is the Belgian National Holiday. On this day in 1831, there was the inauguration of Leopold I of Belgium, first king of the Belgians. It’s the day Belgium became a kingdom. Although many Flemish people ignore this day because of their wish for an independent Flanders, a separation of Belgium into two countries (a French speaking part and a Flemish speaking part), many people do celebrate this day and events have been set up all over the country. Ricard, an alcoholic beverage brand that is also known as Pernod Ricard (a type of Pastis) made a deal with Duval Guillaume Brussels to decorate 18 statues in 9 cities to celebrate this day in a ‘Feel Sunny’ way. Here are some images of this urban guerrilla:

  • Lier (Pallieter – Symforosa)
  • Mechelen (Vadderik, Rembert Dodoens, de turnster)
  • Huy (Les Bourgouis)
  • Turnhout (Adhemar, de babbelaars, de patriot)
  • Diksmuide (Jette vis)
  • Ronse (de zot)
  • Temse (de kaailopers, de azijnzeker)
