Sunburn Vs. Tan

05 Jul 2006

Because of the good weather in Belgium these last few days, I figured these ads might be appropriate. One is for some sort of sunscreen of which I can’t determine the brand (it might as well be some public awareness campaign, but I’m missing the disclaimer to place it in that context) and the other one is for the roofless Mercedes series. Both ads are giving the viewers some sort of unwritten message that totally misses the point. In the one ad for the sunscreen, what I understand as a message is: “don’t wear a helmet, unless you want to look silly”, because even if the guy did have a tan instead of a sunburn, he’d still look incredibly stupid. The other ad, for Mercedes, says:”if you wear your seatbelt, you’ll like like this”, which also is ridiculous. Unless you’re that proud to show off your safe-driving skills. Quite the opposite of what the ads actually try to say, no? It’s probably me.

Sunburn 1

Tan

Thanks, Ben

Wow, apparently the concept has been (ab)used many times already, and the ads aren’t that new at all. Thanks for pointing it out !
