Apple To Become Mobile Virtual Network Operator?

09 Jul 2005

From Forbes : NEW YORK – Apple Computer Chief Executive Steve Jobs has a reputation for thinking different. But now he might be planning a move for Apple that will leave even his biggest fans surprised–becoming a phone company.

Tune in to some excerpts from the [Forbes] publcation :

[...]“It might sound far-fetched, but the pieces are in place for it to happen later this summer. Apple is already developing a hybrid iPod/cell phone with handset maker Motorola.”

[...]“On Wednesday, Disney said it plans to launch a family-centric wireless phone network sometime next year. The venture, called Disney Mobile, will sell mobile service, custom handsets and premium phone content, like ringtones and games featuring Disney characters.”[...]

“Disney will gain access to a dedicated, direct marketing channel to kids, benefiting both from network revenue and from selling its content in a new medium.”[...]

“This way of doing business in the mobile market, known as the “mobile virtual network operator,” or MVNO, is an increasingly popular and successful model for all different kinds of companies.

In December, Disney subsidiary ESPN launched its own mobile network, offering consumers custom sports news and multimedia.

Internet service provider Earthlink did the same in October, targeting high-end users who like to use their phones for e-mail and data access.

And since its launch in 2002, the Virgin Group’s youth-centric Virgin Mobile USA has surged to over three million subscribers, and a public offering is reportedly in the works for later this year.”[...]

“Apple is not the only big company that might roll out cellular service this year. Analysts suggest that other companies with strong brands could be planning their own networks, including Nike and Wal-Mart Stores.”

The solution could be for Apple to launch its own cellular network, doing an end run around carriers and providing the company with revenue from both selling phone handsets and from the resale of cellular service.

“You could certainly see Apple emerge as an MVNO, and then they could control how the phone works,” says Enderle. “It would undoubtedly be the better path for Apple. I think they would be smart to do it.”

If Apple launched their own virtual network, they could even tie it in to their iTunes Music Store. This would allow them to obtain more revenue from the direct sale and download of digital music to phone handsets.”

So. Now you know.

Google Fights Back And Wins

09 Jul 2005

Gary Price over at SearchEngineWatch points to a news-article that states Google has emerged victorious in a domain name dispute. Google has sued ’some people’ who were keeping domains that either had a part of the word Google in it, or that were aiming at common typo’s from surfers to then guide the surfers to ’services alike’ or to bad services and the distribution of malware. Could this be the end of the free use of Googlesomething.ext domains? Perhaps, yes.

Here in Belgium, there’s at least one service I know that could suffer a cease and desist because it reproduces Google’s services, but in a colourful regional/local accent. Visit [Hoehel] – pronounced ‘Hoohle’ – and try to understand how the western part of my country speaks. ;)

Well. The site has been in the news multiple times already, and the author doesn’t hide this. He already made his intentions clear to continue his folklorism on another domain, should the big ‘G’ shut him down. That’s why he’s registered [Jagoe]. Stating clearly he will turn his parody to the Yahoo Search, if Google succeeds in the cease and desist.

The cease and desist [already has been delivered] on june 15th 2004, but the author refuses to stop the service, and translated the letter rather ‘freely’ into the Western-Flemish ‘native tongue’.

Refusal to quit Hoehel.be is based on following points :

1. In Belgium, parodies are exempted of any claims.
2. He doesn’t make money of it, it’s not a commercial business.
3. Hoehel and Google are not resembling in characters.
4. He says the logo might look the same, but Google only had it ® on the 21st of March 2005. Which he considers ‘rather’ late.

Back to the lawsuit with an extract from the [NationalArbitrationForum]:

“The National Arbitration Forum announces today that a ruling has been issued in favor of Google regarding rights to the Internet domain names googkle.com, ghoogle.com, gfoogle.com and gooigle.com.”

“A copy of the decision, Google Inc. v. Sergey Gridasov, is available for viewing on the National Arbitration Forum Web site at: http://www.arb-forum.com/domains/decisions/474816.htm

Interesting reflection of Gary :

“It will be worth monitoring to see if the Googlepex will begin asserting their legal rights over other registered domains that either resemble Google or include the word Google in the domain name.”

Major Cojones

09 Jul 2005

A whole new kind of test! Entertaining yet revealing, the Just-For-Fun Tests give you a quick glimpse into your psyche, sense of right and wrong, and personal quirks. — That’s what it says on top of a 10- question page. Funny test. Apparently I’ve got major cojones. Sometimes.

Cojones

“Your test score reveals that you’ve got major cojones when the situation calls for it – but at other times you prefer to play it safe. Perhaps there are certain things you will do, despite the risk involved, because they are important to you or the possible pay off makes them worth it.

Or maybe certain consequences of such chancy behavior just don’t scare you – we all have different fears. Some people, for example, are terrified of spiders but wouldn’t hesitate to fling their bodies out of an air-borne plane. Whatever your case, carefully weigh the possible benefits against the risks before you make any hasty decisions.”

Well. This gutsy dude with major cojones is going on a paintball-afternoon this sunday, in an old military fort. Sweet.
Let’s see if I can get some pics to prove my gutsyness.

Take [The Cojones Test] and post your degree of ‘ballship’.

15 Common Mistakes By Adsense Users

09 Jul 2005

Some people I know just recently got kicked out of Google’s AdSense Program for one reason or another. Google suspended the accounts. Then I was reading the comments of one particular friend who had blogged away his frustration using the new TypePad 1.6 interface, and somebody had posted a link to 15 helpful tips for publishers who’re enroled in Google’s MoneyMachine.

[...] So here a few helpful reminders, probably many you already know, and few you might gain by knowing now. These are all picked from the Program Policies, Terms and Conditions and FAQ itself and presented in a simplified manner.

1. Never click your own ads or get them clicked for whatever reason.

2. Never change the Adsense code.

3.Do not place more than 3 ad unit and 1 ad links or 2 search boxes on any web page.

4. Do not run competitive contextual text ad or search services

5. Do not disclose confidential information

6. Label headings as “sponsored links” or “advertisements” only.

7. Never launch a New Page for clicked ads by default.

8. One Account suffices for Multiple websites.

9. Place ads only on Content Pages.

10. Do not mask ad elements.

11. Do not send your ads by email.

12.Keep track of your content.

13. Do not alter the results after ad clicks or searches

14. Avoid excessive advertising and keyword stuffing

15. Ensure you Language is Supported

Whenever in doubt, it is better to ask the learned staff of Google Adsense. They are very helpful!

Loic Le Meur vs. John Gibson (FOX)

08 Jul 2005

There’s a big fuzz going on about John Gibson, a Fox News ‘journalist’, who wishes some other city would have been bombed instead of London. This is an outrage ! How could anyone wish this to somebody else? This is a total lack of awareness about the consequences of words, especially when you’re writing for an internationally recognized press agency. John Gibson is an amateur. What follows comes directly from Loic Le Meur’s blog.

John Gibson (Fox News) wishes the French would have suffered from the bombings

Update: the post was dated before the bombings, so I agree my title is a bit misleading, but I think Gibson’s intentions are confirmed by the note he posted the day after his post, check this one:

“The bombings in London: This is why I thought the Brits should let the French have the Olympics – let somebody else be worried about guys with backpack bombs for a while.” Gibson JohnWhat kind of journalist are you, Mr Gibson ? I see your article, Missed Opportunity, as racism and defamation to the French. Actually you could have replaced Paris and the French by any other city and people, I would have thought exactly the same of your words, you are dangerous and I wonder how any media can give you a tribune with such an article.
Too bad you don’t have a blog, Mr Gibson, too bad you don’t have comments on your article, I really wish I would see the reactions of your readers. It is with the kind of words you have that hate and racism like yours spread around the world.

John Gibson:

“Paris was exactly the right place to pick and the Olympic committee screwed up.
Why? Simple. It would have been a three-week period where we wouldn’t have had to worry about terrorism.

First, the French think they are so good at dealing with the Arab world that they would have gone out and paid every terrorist off. And things would have been calm. Or another way to look at it is the French are already up to their eyeballs in terrorists. The French hide them in miserable slums, out of sight of the rich people in Paris.

So it would have been a treat, actually, to watch the French dealing with the problem of their own homegrown Islamist terrorists living in France already.”

more:

It would have been a delight to have Parisians worried about security instead of New Yorkers. It would have been exquisite to watch.

But, alas, they picked London. I like the Brits. I like London. I hate to see them going through all this garbage when it would have been just fine in Paris.”

Dear Mr Gibson, we have dealt many times with terrorism in France, and I can tell you as well that Parisians and the French are worried about security. Your words are just impossible for me to qualify. Shame on you.

Actually I found a few words: articles like this one generate hate and terrorism, you are just like them.

Update:

The readers of my french blog want your apologies, Mr Gibson. and another one tells me that Gibson posts anonymously to FuckFrance.com Lots of reactions already, thanks: Robert Scoble, Dennis Howlett, the Gadget Guy, Joi, Neville, and many others.

Microsoft AntiSpy Downgrades Claria Apps

08 Jul 2005

According to a report at The Register, Eric Howes – a spyware researcher – has confirmed reports that Microsoft AntiSpyware has downgraded Claria’s adware from a recommended action of ‘Quarantine’ to a lower level action of ‘Ignore’. Screenshots posted by Howes at Broadband Reports confirm this.

[The Register] & [Broadband Reports] From [The Unofficial MSWeblog]

“In the full-sized screenshot, it appears that Claria’s GAIN, DashBar, DateManager, and Trickler applications are the ones being rated as software which can be safely ignored.

In the lengthy thread of comments on the Broadband Reports posting, the universal sentiment is that this is serious miscalculation on Microsoft’s part – a reaction I completely agree with. It would appear this change was actually made back in June, not in the most recent update as was originally reported. Microsoft has to know that the general public, trusting them to provide good advice in this tool, will accept the ‘Ignore’ recommendation and allow the Claria adware onto their systems.”

London Reacts Smarter

08 Jul 2005

If you listen between the lines of reportage following the London bombings, you can detect how parts of that city react quicker than any municipal authority in Ireland. The city reacts smarter because of some technology used to help the population survive events like terrorist attacks.

More from [IrishEyes] :

  • Smart CCTV. Around the prime business district and government offices stand intelligent CCTV displays. The closer you get to Canary Wharf, the more you can see–meaning there are many more in cloaked locations. If a bomber leaves the London Underground around the prime nodes of transport, industry and government, a smart camera will record the movement.
  • Smart Mobile Telephony Handovers. In London, one part of the response plan calls for the mobile phone networks to be shut down to customers because terrorists use mobile phones to trigger bombs. This can be invoked under the Access Overload scheme if directed by the command and control authority. Make a call on a mobile phone from a London street corner without holding the phone to your ear and a smart CCTV camera might notice your technique.
  • Smart Transport. London has no qualms about shutting down all transport during an emergency. If you use wheels to go anywhere–even a bicycle–you will be catalogued for future reference. Intelligent CCTV cameras recorded all traffic movement in centre city London and if you drove, you parked within a mile of turning on your ignition.”

Officials have said that the casualty count is now most certainly up to over 50 fatalities, with a lot of bodies still to be recovered from the subway. Over 700 people have been wounded, about 30 very very seriously. 350 people have been taken to surrounding hospitals, 350 have been treated on the spot.

Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt prayers go out to the victims of the blasts on London public transport yesterday.

Chaos In London

07 Jul 2005

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair said it was “reasonably clear” there had been a series of terrorist attacks. At the time there are 2 confirmed fatal casualties, and around 100 people were already reported injured.

He said it was “particularly barbaric” that the attack was timed to coincide with the G8 summit which he would be leaving to return to London. London’s police chief said traces of explosive had been found at one site.

All of London’s public transportation has stopped, and people are urged not to call emergency services.

There were seven explosions, one on a bus and six related to subway (tube) stations. It’s still a confusing situation.

Five explosive devices were found on the subway network, an unidentified firefighter said. Blasts occurred at financial district Underground stations including Liverpool Street, Moorgate and Aldgate East. Police said explosions were also reported at Kings Cross and Edgware Road stations in central London. A bus exploded near Russell Square, killed at least eight, a firefighter said. Scotland Yard wouldn’t comment on the possible causes.

More news is to follow.

“Rejoice, community of Muslims,” the letter states. “The heroic mujahedeens today conducted an attack in London, it continues”. All of Great Britain is now shaken and shocked,”in the north, the south, west and east. We’ve warned the British government and the British people time and again,’ the letter adds. “We’ve kept our promise and have carried out a blessed military operation.”

“We continue to warn the governments of Denmark and Italy and all other crusader governments.” We demand that all countries pull their troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq, states the letter, which has been signed by the ‘Secret Organization’ al Qaida in Europe.”
