Blog Sticks

19 Dec 2006

So, thank you Maarten, Robin, Geert and Randy for throwing me the blog sticks. I think I have enough to start a campfire by now :) Apparently you guys are very interested in those 5 things about me. So, just to satisfy in your tabloid needs, here are the 5 facts about me you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask when we were chatting.

  1. My graduation paper that got awarded with a ‘bachelor award of excellence’ in Flanders was actually written in 3 hours because I had forgotten the due date and was only remembered of it because a fellow student had changed his nickname on MSN into ‘f*cking paper, I hate you’. So I asked him what was up and he said he had been working on it all night because it was due at 1 PM. At that time it was 11 AM. I handed in mine at 3 PM (had to take the train to school etc) – The paper was supposed to be around 20 pages and I had to put in over 10 pages worth of screenshots to make it. And still people thought it was good. Hah.
  2. When I was still young and innocent, I’ve been an altar boy for several years in the church in my street, until the priest caught me eating all the Hosts before the service and also because I kind of lost interest in the entire ‘church thing’. It was pretty cool to ring the bell too early or too late though, because that really annoyed the priest and the entire church was looking at you in a ‘when the hell is he going to hit the gong’ kind of way. Sheer power :)
  3. I was a loner during elementary school and I bought off friendship with candy. During lunch recess we got to play soccer, and I always had to be the goalie because I was a little more fat than the other guys of my class. They were also playing in local youth teams so I never got to play ‘in the field’. Then we got to the finale of the inter-class competetion and we ended up taking penalties. All the wizzkids missed their shot, or it got blocked by the goalie. Then, because we ran out of ‘pro’ players, I finally had the chance to actually try to make a goal. I kicked the ball right under the cross of the goal and all of the sudden I was everyone’s friend, at least for the next week. Then I got back to being the goalie because no one else wanted to do it.
  4. I loved to draw and doodle when I was in high school and did some graffiti work back in the days, mostly on bridges or electricity cabins next to railways. I used the skill to write the names of the girls and boys in my class in some fancy urban style and they loved it. It made me less of a loner. I had a few anarchistic, anti-establishment friends when I was about 15 or so, but I needed a look-out for a nightly job and invited them to come along. I planned do to a nice piece of futuristic city-scapes, but all they wanted to do was spray things like ‘fuck the state’ and ‘imperialistic whores’. I started bombing the wall, but since the punks were smoking and drinking and spraying themselves, they failed to keep an eye open for possible witnesses. Then the cops arrived and we had to flee on our bikes, into the night. I never cycled so fast in my life. I bet at that time I could’ve beaten Lance Armstrong or so. Anyway, I never got caught because I was still sober. The two punks got arrested and they really wanted to tell my name to the cops, but they didn’t know it. Hah. Hard to tell on someone if you don’t have a name. The two punks had to pay for the repainting of the bridge, and four months later when it was done, I put a nice new piece over the fresh white walls. Felt great.
  5. I played classical guitar for over 6 years, finished my classes of music theory and all that, but stopped going to the music school because I never got to play on an electrical guitar like the guys from Metallica, which was why I started studying guitar in the first place.

Bonus, because I got four sticks:

  1. I participated in the Belgian Championship of 1995 for the “Magic: The Gathering” fantasy card game. I ended up with the last ten.
  2. My dad and me are bee keepers. Every summer we harvest honey from them. It just fascinates me how they live, what they do and I can spend hours just sitting in front of the boxes, watching the bees fly in and out.

Hmm. Who should I pass this on to? Kris? Oh, no you just got it. Most of the other bloggers I know or read have already been tagged with this in one way or the other, or they’re not into personal things on their blogs. I’ll just ask it out in the open. Whoever wants this stick, drop a line in the comments and I’ll link you here.

Update:
First stick goes to Grapplica | second stick goes to Darren Straight

Switzerland

11 Dec 2006

Okay, I really wanted to post more stuff here this weekend, but I kinda got stuck doing some extra work for i-merge, where I just stopped working. I promised my (ex)colleagues to help them out with some stuff, and so I didn’t had time to blog. Too bad, but it had to be done. I’m not the kind of guy that lets people down and I can’t really say no. I felt that it kinda was my duty to finish what I started and to round up the things I promised to get done.

So, now I’m all packed to leave for Switzerland to join my new colleagues of Microsoft EMEA. That means I won’t be able to post here for the next two days. I’ll return on wednesday night. I haven’t got a laptop yet, so I feel kind of naked and disconnected from the world. Meeting the new colleagues, on the other hand, is quite a nice experience and I’m looking forward to it.

I’ll catch you all later, and yes: this blog will continue. And no, it won’t turn into a Microsoft blog :) It’ll be just like it always has been, and I’d like to keep it separated from the things I do professionally.

Have a nice start of the week. I know I will.

If This Can Be Sold By Radio

10 Dec 2006

LG&F developed a campaign for the VAR, an organization that manages audio advertisement on the Flemish radio channels. In this campaign two Flemish hits and one international track are being highlighted because of the nonsense of the lyrics. The copy points out that it’s quite obvious that if radio can sell these specific items (that don’t have an actual obvious purpose), you’d be quite surprized of all the things it can sell. On the one hand this campaign seems quite ‘basic’, but on the other I like the angle they’ve chosen to approach the matter. Indeed, radio is a powerful medium, but it’s never been easy to measure just exactly how far it reaches and how popular it is. It’s not an easy brief to turn this into a campaign. Picking the radio hits with songtexts that don’t really make a point is a very creative idea. Indeed, if radio can sell this crap and make it popular, you’d be surprized of all the other crap stuff it can help you sell.

Copy:
“If radio can sell this, you don’t have to ask what it can do for your product.”

“Turn your product into a radio hit. And because you really want to know how high you rank in the charts, the VAR launches the first Belgian ROI stats for radio campaigns. The stats don’t lie, radio is and remains an extremely powerful and profitable medium. We knew this already, but now we can prove it as well. Changing Jobs

05 Dec 2006

Ok, since the word is out, I might as well write about it too. Yes, I’m switching jobs. At the moment I’m in my last week at i-merge, the brandbreeding agency. I’m currently still in the strategic team, but as of December 11th, I’ll be joining a few friends over at Microsoft. I’m going to be an Enthusiast Evangelist for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region and I’ll be listening to (and speaking with) the influential end users, the blogosphere and perhaps some online media.

I’m well aware of the fact that it’s a great challenge, but I think it’s going to be interesting, fun and very learning. I’m looking forward to use all the skills I have and try to fit in as good as possible. I’ll set up a blog to document my thoughts and experiences for starters (I’ll pass on the url when it’s up and running) and I hope I can try to add some relevant ideas and thoughts to the conversations about Microsoft’s products and services.

My first three days on the job will be in Switzerland, where I’ll be meeting the rest of the EMEA team to get acquainted and set up the goals of my job. Updates will follow, stay tuned for that.

I had a great time at i-merge, I learned a lot and met quite a bunch of interesting people with whom I’ll try to stay in touch. It’s been an interesting 9 months of joy and sometimes pain, but mostly joy. Looking back, I don’t think I could’ve been at a better place to start my career. Somewhere I had hoped to stay around a little longer because the strategy section is finally in full force and working at warp speed 10. But this was an opportunity I just had to accept. Without any doubt, i-merge is so going to kick ass in the Belgian ad world very soon. A little less without me (lol) but still. I’m looking forward to seeing the work they’ll be producing. It’s been a wonderful learning school. Thanks guys.

Pretty Polly

05 Dec 2006

On November 23rd, some lucky workmen were assigned to put up Britain’s biggest billboard. The six-storey advert for underwear firm Pretty Polly features a leggy model wearing a real skirt. When the wind plays with the skirt, it lifts the purple material, revealing the model’s black ‘Pretty Polly’ tights. It must be a thrill for the model to pose on a billboard that high. I think the link (or tribute) to Marilyn Monroe’s heroic moment from ‘The Seven Year Itch’ is the basic idea behind it, and I can only cheer for it. Incredibly sexy and a massive impact on society. It’s one of the most impressive moments of film history next to Humphrey Bogart’s quote “We’ll always have Paris” in Casablanca – right before the plane takes off.

Bonus: Famous scene from the film The Seven Year Itch, in which Monroe’s character has her dress blown upwards revealing her underwear.

Lego SkyScraper

30 Nov 2006

i really like the Lego-take on this icon of photographic art. On the one hand you can say that it’s been done before, and sure, you’re right when you say that. But on the other hand, replacing all the builders with kids puts the message in an entirely different perspective. Lego turns kids into builders and therefor, Lego can be entitled to claim this remake without feeling bad about ripping of a concept of a picture that has won a gazillion awards in the past. This picture has the true Lego values embedded inside, and it’s a solid message. It might not be understood by the target audience, it might not be interpreted in the right way if you don’t know the message behind it. But the second look at the concept has nothing but positive thoughts. I think this remake can have the same success as the original one, looking at the quality of the image, the ‘fun’ cluster behind the brand message and the widely-spread print-outs of the original. This one’s a keeper, for sure.

Award

26 Nov 2006

Cool. Last Friday I had to go to Brussels to the buildings of the Ministery of Education to defend the project I’ve developed for i-merge while I was doing my internship there. Apparently people liked it very much. Of the 10.000 graduates, a thousand final projects got sent in. Of those 1000, mine ended up with the last 36. So these 36 people had to come and explain their project to a jury that was constructed out of prominent people of all the participating schools and the sponsoring companies.

Well apparently the jury was quite satisfied, seeing I got 170 or something points and became the first of all entries. So together with ten others, I received the Bachelor Award of excellence for 2006 (the sectors were varying from architecture to marketing) and got a certificate that stated I won plus a small amount of cash. Yeey.

I never really thought I’d make it this far, but apparently I did. Thank you, everyone who helped me and encouraged me. Thank you a lot. This is just great. I’ll try to make some time and translate everything I wrote in English and have the project available if possible. For now I’m just really happy.

See all the winners here.
