Where is the time when audio cassettes still did the trick? Observe the various implementations of this deluxe device Tiger once released, and think back to the endless days of super-spy-fun you once had. Fun for hours, unlimited rewind/rewrite functions… OMG. I feel sooooo old when I see this stuff flash by again. I think the clip is from 1995, but it seems almost like it’s from the 80s. Waaaaay back in the days.

A sysadmin unpacked the server for this website from its box, installed an operating system, patched it for security, made sure the power and air conditioning was working in the server room, monitored it for stability, set up the software, and kept backups in case anything went wrong. All to serve this webpage.

A sysadmin installed the routers, laid the cables, configured the networks, set up the firewalls, and watched and guided the traffic for each hop of the network that runs over copper, fiber optic glass, and even the air itself to bring the Internet to your computer. All to make sure the webpage found its way from the server to your computer. So, If you can read this, thank your sysadmin!

If you can endorse this guy for a funky brand… you have an entire community within reach. And if you endorse him right without abusing the concept for some cheap stunt I can assure you there’s a hit commercial ready to be born. Other than that, I’m pretty sure that this guy can be a headliner in just about any cool event that targets youngsters. And yeah, I was just looking for a reason to post these kick-ass clips. Still… there’s got to be something you can do with this.

The mammoth seven hour show on BBC ONE, featured the biggest line up of presenters ever including Jonathan Ross, Russell Brand, Lenny Henry, Davina McCall, Graham Norton, Paul O’Grady, Fearne Cotton, Kate Thornton and Chris Evans, who was overwhelmed by the success of the show, saying ‘This is by far the most exciting Comic Relief night I’ve ever been to – it’s the best comedy ever’. One of the most memorable highlights was Ricky Gervais’ special ‘appeal film’ starring Sir Bob Geldof, Bono, Stephen Merchant, Jamie Oliver and Andi Peters.

Last night I took a direct flight to Hannover in Germany to go to the CeBit event. The world’s largest consumer electronics fair. I was a little late with booking the hotel (a year late, because I’ve heard people are booking a year ahead) so I ended up on 90 km from Hannover. The cab drive to the hotel took 1.5 hours from the airport, and it was 120 km. (75 miles)… I had a really retarded cab driver. In Germany, large parts of the freeway have no speed limit, but he kept driving 70 miles an hour. I ended up in some sort of spa, in the middle of nowhere. When I look outside my window I see trees. Trees as far as the eye can see. My hotel room has a 14 inch tv with 9 channels, all German. There is no bar in the hotel, and no internet access. Well, there is internet access before 8 PM, after that there’s no more access to the booth. Argh. My hands are shaking… Must Need Access…

Anyway, I had to unplug the tv and the night-light because I needed the plugs to charge my cam and the two laptops. I set the alarm on 7 am, took a shower when I woke up and went downstairs to order a taxi. 20 minutes later I was well on my way to the event. This cab driver was a little more relaxed at higher speeds, and we flew at 240 km/h (150mph) in the general direction of Hannover’s ‘Messe’. The weirdest thing ever I encountered was that, while driving at 240 km/h, the cabbie had to pull over to the right lane to let a series of cars pass us by. It looked like we were standing still. You gotta love the Germans.

I got dropped off at the main entrance, and met up with Hans Mestrum and Erik Van Roekel, two Dutch bloggers who’re experiencing some ‘wow’ at the CeBit fair. I gave Erik a private Vista demo, because he was a little disappointed when he installed it and he didn’t really ‘felt’ the difference with XP. I showed of some tools and we discussed the ‘best’ new features, and he said that what he missed the most was a decent tutorial when you buy it, because a lot of the things I showed him weren’t really known. (disclaimer: Microsoft sent me to CeBit to make a documentary). Then I gave Hans the Sony Vaio I brought with me, and with that, my influencers program kicked off. I showed off the goodies that came with the laptop and Hans actually started blogging with it almost right after we had lunch.

Then I went on a booth tour with Erik to score some swag and see what’s new on the technology front. This CeBit event is HUGE. It’s a small city filled with vendors. Thousands of people walking around and every company with digital or electronic products is represented here. It’s geek paradise. I’ll edit my videos tonight at the hotel and hope to have them online as soon as possible. I’m already very happy that the Tulip booth has a lounge with network cables available, so I could post this :)

I saw a lot of cool things, but didn’t see anything revolutionary yet. I’ll keep my eyes and ears open to see what goes down. There’s still so much to explore. We’ve been running around for hours on end, and still have done only 15% of the total event floor.

This has been around for about a year or so, but I never got to blog about it. Then today I accidentally stumbled upon a video from the project and I just wanted to add this to my archive, for keepers. I have a thing for virtual toys and projects. This particular one is from Anand Agarawala & Ravin Balakrishnan for the DGP (Dynamic Graphics Project) at the university of Toronto, Canada. The University of Toronto’s Dynamic Graphics Project (dgp) is an interdisciplinary research laboratory within the Department of Computer Science. The lab’s mission is advanced research and graduate instruction in human-computer interaction and computer graphics. DGP is home base to Computer Science faculty and students in these two areas.

I don’t think I can live with this sort of desktop, because I’m too attached to seeing a file name under an icon and to ‘folders’ where I can stash stuff in to. This BumpTop desktop, however, is quite a refreshing idea and I love where this is going. It would be great to have it as an optional feature in my current OS, but not really as a permanent environment to work in. That’s my two cents. Looks super smooth though.

Looks like our French neighbors have adapted Ricky Gervais’ concept and they started making ‘Le Bureau’ last year. The setting is Villepinte, a business park in the northeast suburbs of Paris. The series stars François Berléand as Gilles Triquet, France’s version of David Brent. Another notable actor, Jérémie Elkaïm, also stars in the series playing the French version of Tim Canterbury. Filming with the French cast was completed in early February; the series began airing on May 25. A second season is already in the works and the writer-director duo of Nicholas and Bruno say at least one show will focus on a French perennial: strikes.

The Hug Shirt is a Bluetooth accessory for Java enabled mobile phones. Hug shirts don’t have any assigned phone number, all the data goes from the sensors Bluetooth to your mobile phone and your mobile phone delivers the hug data to your friend’s phone and it is seamlessly transmitted Bluetooth to his or her shirt!
Sending hugs is as easy as sending an SMS and you will be able to send hugs while you are on the move, in the same way and to the same places you are able to make phone calls (Rome to Tokyo, New York to Paris).

The system is very simple: a Hug Shirt (Bluetooth with sensors and actuators), a Bluetooth java enabled mobile phone with the Hug Me java software running (it understands what the sensors are communicating), and on the other side another phone and another shirt. If you do not have a Hug Shirt but know that your friend has one you can still send them a hug creating it with the HugMe software and it will be delivered to your friend’s Hug Shirt!

The Hug Shirt is not meant to replace human contact, but to make you happy if you are away for business or other reasons and you miss your friends and loved ones! It also has some very interesting applications in the medical field with the elderly and children. And is fun to use and very soft!

It’s well on its way to collect the 50th (!) award and it’s a very impressive piece of creativity. Tadeo Jones is an adventurer like Indiana Jones (no family though) and he’s exploring some sort of ancient Egyptian site in search of the treasure. On his way to the treasure room and back he runs into all sorts of curious and dangerous situations. This is definitely a must-see!

Allrighty, here is the entire second season. I couldn’t pospone the searching, I just had to have my daily dose. There’s something odd about all the episodes though. NBC’s list is only 19 episodes long, but when I look around, I find way more then the ‘official’ list lines up. Pretty weird and quite hard to figure it out, so I’ll just add ‘the extras’ after the ones I could place based on the episode archive from NBC. Also, unfortunately, there’s a two second delay in the second episode. That’s too bad and I haven’t found an alternative file online… The Valentine’s episode, in case you haven’t already watched it, has a nice twist I think. And I really laughed a lot with ‘The Injury’ as well. These guys did a very good job, I’m glad I finally got to watch the entire series, all at once. Oh, and FYI, the gift Dwight has gotten from Angela for his Valentine Day is on sale in the NBC store.

Yesterday I accidentally stumbled upon an episode of the American version of The Office, the masterpiece that first saw daylight behind the twinkling eyes of Ricky Gervais. I had heard that the US version was not as good as the UK version, but frankly, I have to reconsider my point of view. I just love this, really. Nobody can replace Ricky Gervais, true, but you just have to check this out. It’s hilarious. In this case, The Office takes a painfully funny look at the interactions of cubicle jockeys at the Dunder Mifflin paper supply company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Tune in for the full third season and enjoy. If I have some more time this week, I’ll dig up the other seasons and line them up on this blog as well.

Yes! They’re back! Briefly, but still. Tomorrow is the second part of the 3 podcasts, you can still tune in for the Halloween edition right here (mp3, 14 MB)

Halloween edition includes: Ghostly drivel abounds as Steve consults a text-based oracle, Karl experiences a kidney probing, Steve visits Bristol, Karl becomes a Godfather and Ricky tells of some lighter moments at the morgue. Plus a competition to win CDs and books signed by podcasting’s top triumvirate.

I can’t wait to hear the Thanksgiving edition tomorrow, and then I’ll have to wait a month again to listen to the Christmas special on December 25th. Be part of this phenomenon, download it today and tomorrow and brighten up your Christmas with the ultra hilarious threesome of pod.

Find tomorrow’s edition on Guardian Unlimited

Good impressions, that’s what people must have of you once you’ve stopped the conversation you were having. At work I have a few colleagues who’re quite good at it. A closing line, totally off-topic and so far out it’s actually a damn shame nobody was there to record it. So that’s why I’ve been searching a little for a tool that suits fine to play along in the game. Every time I send out an email to one of these colleagues next week, I’ll include a cunning phrase to entice their thinking and make them philosophically ease back in their chair to stroke their imaginary beards. Examples might be:

“As my uncle Will always used to say: Nothing is quite as distracting as the memory of pressing an ice-cold cola bottle to their jugular right in the middle of a United Nations reception.”

“Someone has put it this way: Thanks to you, at this precise moment someone is feeling the sensation of a staggering religious epiphany right in the middle of soothing the escaped tiger.”

Or: “Remember: There’s nothing that can wake someone up like the feeling of having their nipples removed and cleaned right in the middle of freeclimbing the face of El Capitan.”

Yeah. It’s always good to end conversations with an impressive literate line.
