Fun In The Back Seat

22 Mar 2007

You wouldn’t believe how much fun it is to hit the brakes all of the sudden when some of your friends refuse to wear the seatbelt in the back of the car. But seriously… when you drive fast… the amount of fun decreases exponenitally as your speedometer crawls more to the right on the display. The degree of ‘yadda yadda-ness’ that is percepted by teens who’ve just passed their driving test, or even by youngsters who’ve been driving around for some time is quite high when ‘another grown-up’ comes to tell them about the dangers of driving without seat belt. That’s why the outdoor pictured below might help people realize what the consequences are. I think it’s a cool example of how you can reach out to a certain audience without falling back on a boring theoretical explanation.

Honk If You’re Horny

20 Mar 2007

The entire month of March, Radio Vilvoorde – a radio station in the suburbs of Brussels – is giving away a car for free. For the competition they broadcast the sound of a car horn three times, spread over the day. The listener who sends a text message to the competition number the fastest after the car horn sounded for the third time is being called. If he/she knows the secret word that has been revealed during morning broadcast hours, they win the car. (Apparently a Lancia)

Sunbeam

I know, I know… it’s been done before. I just thought it was funny. It must be a pain in the ass for everyone who works in a shop with the doors open in the city center, or for construction workers on some construction site. Hahah. Man, if it was up to me, I’d be driving through Vilvoorde honking like crazy all day. Eat that, radio advertising!

Chicken Or Egg

20 Mar 2007

How weird. Two ads, two brands, two agencies… thousands of miles apart and exactly the same idea. Time to rethink the concept guys… the channel has been used, it looks great, but it’s time to switch the rifle from shoulder. The next agency that pulls a stunt like this better make it more remarkable. I have to add that the Belgian one is far less sophisticated because it uses a two-staged display, while the one in Chile uses four stages and it pictures the hand, which makes it more clear. On top of that, the message in the last stage is way better too. It’ll explain the message to the passers-by in no time.

E5 Fashion

19 Mar 2007

Pretty funny campaign from Belgian origin, with a little twist at the end of the clip. The story behind the idea is this one (it’s also the copy of the ad): “Do you also have a bulged out closet and still can’t find anything to wear? E5 fashion wants to do something about it, so don’t hestitate to make an appointment with the styling consultant in your E5 fashion store on www.e5mode.be or via 03/760.39.75. Our goal is to make you leave our store with our advice: as yourself in a style that suits you.” – As much as I like the idea, I think it’s really derogatory to the man in the last frame to be pictured in his pinkinsh/purplish undies in the middle of all the women, especially when the tagline reads: “89% of women yet again didn’t have something to wear this morning” (added with: “Others just let themselves be advized”). Okay, the guy wears pink undies, but that only makes him half a woman, or perhaps he’s single and screwed up his laundry. Either way, as a man, I feel personally cheated on. I call ‘bogus’ on this campaign and its statistics! (just kidding, but I thought it was funny they’ve also put a man in it)

No Sniffing Allowed

19 Mar 2007

No, this isn’t a huge scam to drug the people with chemical odor as they pass by, it’s just a promotion for FedexKinkos in which they make it seem like they’ve just been painting the pedestrian crossing in the middle of downtown somewhere. Nice promo kit, although I wonder why they only covered half of the crossing. If you look closer, you’ll see that the zebra crossing ends after the island in the middle, which makes it kind of seem like this isn’t an official crossing. Kind of confusing. Does the bottle only hold enough to do half of your work? Hmm.

Heavy Duty Tape

19 Mar 2007

It looks a bit like a¨Photoshopped job from a student, but apparently it’s not a demo case. The setup below was really executed outdoor, which makes it even more remarkable to me. Although I wonder that the billboard is being held by the taped, the roll is stuck on it is holding itself up. That’s a nice example of the product’s benefit. With the four corners of the billboard seemingly stuck by tape as well, the total overview of the ad delivers a nice experience to look at. Even if it’s a little tricked, it’s the illusion that counts.

CeBit Hannover

15 Mar 2007

Last night I took a direct flight to Hannover in Germany to go to the CeBit event. The world’s largest consumer electronics fair. I was a little late with booking the hotel (a year late, because I’ve heard people are booking a year ahead) so I ended up on 90 km from Hannover. The cab drive to the hotel took 1.5 hours from the airport, and it was 120 km. (75 miles)… I had a really retarded cab driver. In Germany, large parts of the freeway have no speed limit, but he kept driving 70 miles an hour. I ended up in some sort of spa, in the middle of nowhere. When I look outside my window I see trees. Trees as far as the eye can see. My hotel room has a 14 inch tv with 9 channels, all German. There is no bar in the hotel, and no internet access. Well, there is internet access before 8 PM, after that there’s no more access to the booth. Argh. My hands are shaking… Must Need Access…

Anyway, I had to unplug the tv and the night-light because I needed the plugs to charge my cam and the two laptops. I set the alarm on 7 am, took a shower when I woke up and went downstairs to order a taxi. 20 minutes later I was well on my way to the event. This cab driver was a little more relaxed at higher speeds, and we flew at 240 km/h (150mph) in the general direction of Hannover’s ‘Messe’. The weirdest thing ever I encountered was that, while driving at 240 km/h, the cabbie had to pull over to the right lane to let a series of cars pass us by. It looked like we were standing still. You gotta love the Germans.

I got dropped off at the main entrance, and met up with Hans Mestrum and Erik Van Roekel, two Dutch bloggers who’re experiencing some ‘wow’ at the CeBit fair. I gave Erik a private Vista demo, because he was a little disappointed when he installed it and he didn’t really ‘felt’ the difference with XP. I showed of some tools and we discussed the ‘best’ new features, and he said that what he missed the most was a decent tutorial when you buy it, because a lot of the things I showed him weren’t really known. (disclaimer: Microsoft sent me to CeBit to make a documentary). Then I gave Hans the Sony Vaio I brought with me, and with that, my influencers program kicked off. I showed off the goodies that came with the laptop and Hans actually started blogging with it almost right after we had lunch.

Then I went on a booth tour with Erik to score some swag and see what’s new on the technology front. This CeBit event is HUGE. It’s a small city filled with vendors. Thousands of people walking around and every company with digital or electronic products is represented here. It’s geek paradise. I’ll edit my videos tonight at the hotel and hope to have them online as soon as possible. I’m already very happy that the Tulip booth has a lounge with network cables available, so I could post this :)

I saw a lot of cool things, but didn’t see anything revolutionary yet. I’ll keep my eyes and ears open to see what goes down. There’s still so much to explore. We’ve been running around for hours on end, and still have done only 15% of the total event floor.
